Moonshot AI Files Confidentially for Hong Kong IPO, Targets $3 Billion Raise

Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI, the company behind the Kimi large language model, has reportedly taken a major step toward becoming a publicly traded company after confidentially filing for an initial public offering in Hong Kong.

According to people familiar with the matter, Moonshot is targeting approximately $3 billion from the IPO, potentially making it one of the most significant public-market listings by a Chinese AI startup. The company is currently valued at around $50 billion in an ongoing funding round, according to separate sources cited by Reuters.

Kimi Developer Moves Toward Public Markets

Moonshot AI has become one of China’s better-known AI startups through its Kimi chatbot and large language models. The company’s decision to pursue a Hong Kong listing comes as Chinese technology companies increasingly look to public markets to finance the enormous costs associated with developing and deploying advanced AI systems.

The reported IPO is still at an early stage. Moonshot has not publicly confirmed the transaction and said it currently has no information to disclose. The final size, valuation and timing could therefore change depending on regulatory approvals and market conditions.

The company is reportedly working with major financial institutions including Goldman Sachs, China International Capital Corporation (CICC) and Deutsche Bank on the potential offering.

$50 Billion Valuation Faces Public-Market Test

Moonshot’s reported $50 billion valuation would represent a major milestone for China’s AI sector. However, a private funding valuation and a public-market valuation are not necessarily the same.

Private investors may accept higher valuations based on expectations of future growth, while public investors typically have access to more financial information and can react immediately to profitability, competition and regulatory risks.

A $3 billion offering at a $50 billion valuation would also provide Moonshot with substantial financial resources to continue investing in AI models, computing infrastructure, talent and commercial expansion.

The company has reportedly undergone a corporate restructuring ahead of the listing, including moving from an offshore incorporation structure to an onshore China domicile. That step could bring additional regulatory and reporting requirements as the IPO process progresses.

China’s AI Startup Race Enters a New Phase

Moonshot’s potential listing comes during a period of intense competition among Chinese AI companies. Startups are racing to develop increasingly capable models while competing with established technology companies for computing resources, engineers and enterprise customers.

A successful Hong Kong IPO could give Moonshot additional capital to compete in that market while giving investors a new way to gain exposure to China’s AI industry.

For now, the filing remains confidential and the details are subject to change. But if Moonshot ultimately raises around $3 billion, the listing could become an important test of how public markets value China’s leading AI startups.
