SSI Brings AI Into Ship Design, and Keeps It on a Short Leash

Shipbuilding software specialist SSI has dropped an AI assistant into the middle of the ship design process, but it has been careful about what that assistant is allowed to do. The new SSI Assistant, headlining the ShipConstructor 2027 R2 release and reachable through the SSI Desktop App, lets designers and production teams ask questions in plain language and get answers pulled from the company’s own material: ShipConstructor and ShipExplorer documentation, ShipbuildingPLM, training courses, the knowledge base, and support articles.

The pitch is simple and unglamorous. Anyone who has designed a vessel knows how much time disappears into hunting through manuals and old support threads for one specific answer. SSI Assistant is meant to collapse that search into a single question, keeping the answer in front of the designer instead of sending them off into a browser tab.

A retrieval tool, not a decision-maker

What stands out is where SSI stopped. The company has pointedly not billed this as an autonomous design or engineering-approval tool. It answers questions about the software and the process; it does not sign off on a hull, approve equipment, or make engineering calls. In an industry where drawings go to classification societies and where the customer is sometimes a navy, that restraint is the responsible read. Ship design is safety-critical work with a long paper trail, and an AI that confidently invented an answer in the wrong place could be worse than no AI at all.

That approach mirrors a broader pattern in enterprise software. Rather than chasing flashy autonomous agents, a growing number of vendors are grounding AI narrowly in their own verified documentation, so the assistant can only speak to what it actually knows. For a field as specialized as shipbuilding, that narrow, grounded design is a feature, not a shortcoming.

More than a chatbot

The assistant is the headline, but it is not the whole release. ShipConstructor 2027 R2 adds checks that flag mismatches between functional requirements and the equipment a team has selected, catching that kind of error before modeling begins rather than after. Other updates touch bill-of-material revisions, electrical connection points, and the transfer of validated engineering information between sister-ship projects, all of it aimed squarely at SSI’s long-running fixation on cutting rework. ShipbuildingPLM 4.0, meanwhile, gains search and filtering inside its 3D visualization environment.

The release fits a direction SSI has pushed for a while: pulling design and production closer together so information stops falling through the cracks between them. An earlier tie-up with PipeCloud, announced over the summer, already feeds design data straight into pipe fabrication workflows. The new version is available now through SSI Nexus.

SSI has been building shipbuilding software for more than three decades, and its tools sit inside yards turning out everything from commercial vessels to naval hulls. That history is probably why the AI here feels measured rather than breathless. So is a search assistant grounded in a company’s own manuals a modest step or a smart one? In a business where a wrong answer can echo all the way to the dry dock, modest and smart may be the same thing.
