MALTA, New York, United States

GlobalFoundries is expanding its role in the artificial intelligence semiconductor supply chain through an agreement to manufacture a critical component for TSMC’s advanced AI chip packages at its facility in New York.

The component, known as a silicon interposer, sits beneath processors and memory chips inside advanced semiconductor packages. It allows the different components to communicate at very high speeds, making it an increasingly important part of the infrastructure supporting modern AI computing.

The partnership highlights how the AI semiconductor industry is expanding beyond the manufacture of processors themselves. As AI systems become more powerful, packaging, connectivity and high-speed memory are becoming increasingly important to overall computing performance.

Advanced packaging becomes critical to AI chips

AI processors require extremely fast communication with memory because large AI models process enormous amounts of data.

Silicon interposers help connect processors and memory within advanced packages, allowing information to move between components at high speeds. The technology is therefore becoming an important part of the semiconductor industry’s effort to improve AI computing performance.

GlobalFoundries’ agreement with TSMC shows how major chip manufacturers are increasingly working across different parts of the semiconductor supply chain to meet rising demand.

The development is also significant for the United States, where policymakers and technology companies are attempting to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing and reduce dependence on overseas production.

New York facility gains a role in AI infrastructure

GlobalFoundries will manufacture the interposers at its facility in New York, adding another layer of advanced semiconductor production to the company’s U.S. operations.

The move comes as semiconductor companies invest heavily in expanding production capacity to support demand generated by AI data centers.

TSMC remains one of the most important manufacturers in the global AI supply chain. The company reported record third-quarter revenue of approximately $46.7 billion on Thursday, up 50% from the same period a year earlier, driven by strong demand for AI-related applications.

The strong performance illustrates the scale of the AI semiconductor boom and the growing demand for technologies that can improve processor performance.

AI chip supply chain becomes more specialized

The GlobalFoundries and TSMC partnership demonstrates how the semiconductor industry is becoming increasingly specialized as AI workloads grow.

Processor manufacturers, memory suppliers, packaging companies and equipment providers all play critical roles in building the infrastructure required to support advanced AI systems.

For technology companies, the ability to improve communication between processors and memory could become an important source of performance gains as conventional improvements in chip manufacturing become more difficult and expensive.

The agreement therefore represents more than a manufacturing partnership. It reflects the broader transformation of the semiconductor supply chain as AI demand drives investment into every layer of computing infrastructure.
