Keep Your Website Functioning with These Top Tips

Building your website is only the first part of the journey. Just as important (and just as much fun) is maintaining it and growing it. Your site will need regular TLC to keep it in top working condition, but there are a number of different steps you can take to keep it functioning at a high level.

Here are some tips to keep your website functioning.

Update Regularly

Different aspects of your website, such as the theme and plugins, will periodically have updates that need to be installed. These updates not only offer improved functionality, but they’re also designed to close up any security weaknesses.

By running outdated plugins and themes, you open your website up to the risk of a hack, which can severely damage all your hard work.

Updating your website regularly is a good way to ensure you’re giving your visitors the best experience while protecting their security at the same time.

Don’t Go Plugin Crazy

Plugins can add a lot of value to your website, but they also have the effect of slowing it down. If you’ve got lots of plugins running in the background, then it can seriously impact your load speeds, losing you lots of potential visitors.

People want websites to load fast, and in general, they’re just looking for a clean, easy to use experience. You don’t need tons of plugins to achieve this, so only use the ones that are vital to what you want to achieve.

If you’re not using a plugin, then make sure you delete it and free your site up to load a bit quicker.

User Experience

This is a fairly simple one – fix the things that aren’t working!

User experience errors drive people crazy, and they’re an easy way to lose visitors. It doesn’t matter how good your content is, if you’ve got issues such as poor layouts, slow page speeds, broken links, and missing information, then you’re going to miss out on a lot of visitors.

Your website needs to be focussed on the person at the other end of the computer, so you’ve got to make it easy to navigate. Fix the simple errors and make sure your pages are straightforward to use.

Security

You can never take your online security too seriously, and this means investing in the right protection like the SonicWall products. Website hacks are all too common, and if you suffer one, it can quickly wipe out all your hard work.

It’s easy to think it won’t happen to you, but every day sites are getting hacked, and it can be really costly if it happens to you.

Engage with Your Visitors

Your website is your opportunity to build a relationship with visitors and potential customers. To do this, though, you’ve got to be prompt at replying and starting that dialogue.

If you get comments or emails, take them seriously, and work on the relationship. The more you engage with people, the more you will build a loyal fan base.
