Forged degrees have been a stubborn problem in Kenya for years. A fake certificate could sail through a hiring process because checking it meant written requests, physical file retrieval, and weeks of back-and-forth. Kenya’s answer is now live, and it runs on Avalanche. The Kenya National Examinations Council has built a verification platform on the network that lets employers, universities, and government offices confirm an academic record in seconds instead of months.
What Kenya actually put on chain
KNEC is anchoring both old and new exam records on Avalanche’s C-Chain, reaching all the way back to 1989. More than 15 million credentials across various national exam programs are already integrated, and the council expects that figure to climb toward 35 million as the rollout continues. On top of the historical archive, the system is built to handle millions of freshly issued digital certificates every year as new cohorts finish their exams.
The 2025 KCSE class is the first to feel it directly. Roughly one million certificates from that year now exist only through the digital system. Students pull, download, and verify their own credentials through a protected portal, and an employer on the other end can validate the qualification on the spot rather than waiting out a monthslong queue.
Why blockchain, and not just another database
This is the part worth slowing down on, because Kenya has tried digital fixes before. Earlier efforts leaned on centralized databases and printed QR codes, and fraudsters simply worked around them. They copied the QR codes and spun up counterfeit verification sites dressed up to look like the real portal. If the source of truth can be duplicated or spoofed, the whole system leaks.
Tying each record to an immutable ledger entry closes that gap. Verification stops being a favor you request from an institution and becomes an independent proof anyone can check. An organization confirms whether the certificate in front of it matches the authentic record on chain, full stop. One honest caveat: KNEC hasn’t released adoption numbers yet, so how quickly employers and schools actually lean on the platform is still an open question.
A pattern, not a one-off
The initiative stretches across the whole education ladder, from KCPE and KCSE exams to advanced diplomas and teaching credentials. And it fits a wider trend that Avalanche watchers have been tracking for a while. The network has quietly become a go-to for public-record work rather than pure speculation. India’s Dantewada district digitized more than 700,000 land ownership records on an Avalanche-based platform. In the United States, California has moved millions of vehicle titles on chain, and Bergen County started tokenizing property deeds.
Kenya’s credential system now joins that list, and it may be the most people-facing example yet. Land deeds and car titles matter, but a school-leaving certificate is the document that decides whether someone gets an interview. Governments experimenting with blockchain for records is not new. What stands out here is scale and stakes: 35 million records, tied to the futures of ordinary graduates, on a public network built to be hard to forge. Whether it becomes the model other African nations copy will depend on how well it holds up once the whole country starts using it.
