Qualcomm is expanding aggressively into the artificial intelligence infrastructure market after signing a major long-term agreement with Amazon that could see the e-commerce and cloud giant purchase up to $60 billion worth of Qualcomm AI data-center chips and related products. The deal gives Qualcomm a much larger role in the rapidly growing market for custom AI computing hardware, while Amazon gains another potential source of chips beyond Nvidia and its own silicon efforts.
Amazon Becomes a Major Customer for Qualcomm’s AI Hardware
Under the agreement, Amazon will have the right to purchase Qualcomm’s AI data-center products over the long term. The companies are also working together on advanced optical connectivity technology, an increasingly important component as AI data centers handle growing volumes of data between processors, memory and networking systems.
The financial structure of the deal also includes warrants that give Amazon the right to purchase Qualcomm shares at $161.26 per share, with the warrants valued at roughly $4 billion.
For Qualcomm, the agreement represents a significant expansion beyond its traditional strength in smartphone processors. The company has been attempting to build new revenue streams as the mobile semiconductor market becomes more mature and as Apple’s move away from Qualcomm modem technology creates additional pressure.
Qualcomm Targets the AI Infrastructure Market
Qualcomm’s strategy is increasingly centered on custom AI accelerators and data-center infrastructure. The company is targeting as much as $15 billion in data-center chip revenue by 2029, putting it in competition with established AI chip suppliers as well as cloud companies developing their own processors.
Amazon already develops its own AI hardware through its AWS Trainium and Inferentia families. Qualcomm’s involvement therefore highlights a broader industry trend: hyperscalers are increasingly using a combination of internally developed chips and external silicon to support expanding AI workloads.
Microsoft and Meta have also been working with Qualcomm, giving the chipmaker relationships with several of the world’s largest cloud and technology companies.
Optical Connectivity Becomes Part of the AI Chip Race
The Qualcomm-Amazon relationship extends beyond processors. The companies are also developing optical connectivity technologies designed to address the increasing bandwidth requirements of AI data centers.
As AI models become larger, performance increasingly depends not only on individual accelerators but also on how quickly thousands of processors can communicate with one another. That makes networking and optical infrastructure an increasingly important part of the AI hardware stack.
Qualcomm is also expanding its use of AWS for chip design, potentially allowing the company to shorten development cycles while relying more heavily on cloud-based computing resources.
A Broader Challenge to Nvidia’s Dominance
The deal does not immediately threaten Nvidia’s dominant position in AI accelerators, but it demonstrates how quickly the competitive landscape is expanding.
Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and other hyperscalers have strong incentives to diversify their computing infrastructure because AI demand is driving enormous spending on data centers and specialized hardware. Qualcomm’s agreement with Amazon therefore represents more than a single customer contract: it reflects the growing push by major technology companies to build a broader AI chip ecosystem.
For Qualcomm, securing Amazon as a major long-term customer could provide a significant foundation for its transition from a primarily mobile-focused semiconductor company into a broader AI infrastructure supplier.
