SAN FRANCISCO, United States, AI infrastructure startup Upscale AI has launched a networking platform designed to allow data centers to connect artificial intelligence chips from different suppliers, targeting a growing challenge for companies expanding computing capacity amid strong demand for AI infrastructure.
The startup, which was valued at $2 billion in June, introduced Token Fabric on Thursday. The platform combines networking hardware and software to connect AI processors across data centers without requiring customers to build separate networking systems for different chip suppliers.
Startup targets fragmented AI hardware
The AI computing market has historically been dominated by Nvidia, but demand for alternative processors has grown as cloud providers and specialized data center operators seek more flexibility in their infrastructure.
Upscale AI is betting that customers will increasingly operate systems containing chips from multiple suppliers. Its Token Fabric platform is designed to help those processors communicate efficiently while reducing the need for separate networking infrastructure.
The company said the technology combines its own networking chips with equipment using Nvidia’s Spectrum-X technology and software capable of identifying bottlenecks and flagging equipment that may need replacement.
For data center operators, improving the utilization of expensive AI processors has become increasingly important. A chip that spends significant time waiting for data can reduce the efficiency of an entire computing system.
Strong funding supports expansion
Upscale AI has attracted substantial backing as investors look for startups positioned to benefit from the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.
The company raised a $190 million extension to its early-stage funding round in June, bringing its total funding to $500 million. Investors include Nvidia, Salesforce and Singapore state investor Temasek, while the June financing was led by Premji Invest.
The company’s latest product launch gives investors another indication of how startups are attempting to address infrastructure bottlenecks created by the AI boom.
Upscale expects Token Fabric revenue to reach tens of millions of dollars next year and potentially grow into the low hundreds of millions as adoption expands. The first part of the platform is expected to launch during the fourth quarter, with the full system rolling out in stages through 2027.
AI infrastructure creates opportunities beyond chips
Upscale AI’s strategy reflects a broader shift in the startup ecosystem. As AI companies spend heavily on processors, data centers and electricity, opportunities are emerging for businesses that can improve how those resources operate together.
The ability to support multiple chip suppliers could also become increasingly valuable as customers seek alternatives and greater flexibility in their AI infrastructure.
For Upscale AI, success will depend on whether data center operators adopt its platform at scale. If AI computing continues to expand rapidly, infrastructure startups that solve connectivity and utilization challenges could become an increasingly important part of the technology ecosystem.
