The Coronavirus Pandemic struck the world unexpectedly and because of this most of life as we know it was stopped, Sports was no exception every major sporting event in the world was either canceled or postponed.
The UFC, however, made sure that it kept on scheduling fights and entertaining its fans, The UFC had already organized a couple of events in the US, but this July they took everything one thing further.
International fighters were not able to visit the United States due to the restrictions and therefore Dana White current UFC President decided that they must organize the UFC events in some other part of the world, and thus the idea of Fight Capital was born.
The UFC schedule its first batch of matches in Abu Dhabi as part of UFC 251, the first round of events were scheduled over 4 days, it started from the 11th of July, the 15th, 18th and finally, the 25th of July saw the matches ending.
These matches were a resounding success and were a positive affair for all parties involved, the event was such a success that the last time UFC saw such positive response was after the Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov fight.
Due to the success of the fights, Dana White claimed that the Fighting Capital of the world is no longer Las vegas but that now Abu Dhabi is the new “Fighting Capital” of the world.
The UFC had planned UFC 252 in the US, but after the speculation of lockdown being imposed again in Nevada, these events are in jeopardy.
Dana White’s claims of Abu Dhabi being the new “Fight Capital” of the world can be backed by his plans to hold three blockbuster fights in the next phase of the Fight Island events in September.
These fights would feature some of the best fighters in the UFC, fights between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa, and one involving the returning great Khabib Nurmagomedov is also on the cards, however, Daniel Cormier claims that Khabib might not return to action until next year, a fight between Weili Zhang and Rose Namajunas is also expected to take place in Abu Dhabi this September.
With the type of success that the first face of the “Fight Island” event had, Dana White claims seem accurate enough, it would be interesting to see what the situation is in September and how much interest the fights generate this time around. Well, the prospect of Khabib returning and Fights involving fighters like Paulo Costa and Weili Zhang would certainly help in gathering attention towards the event.
